The system of Universities in Italy is simple to that one of the United Kingdom. An educational year in the Italy is divided into two semesters, the term of one discipline, as a rule, lasts no longer than semester. The examinations are taking place in the beginning of the studying year – in September, in the middle of the year - (from January till February), and in the end of the year – (from May till July).
The grades of the knowledge evaluation are from 1 till 30, 18 is that very grade, which means that the examination was passed. At the end of each educational course (Laurea one – a Bachelor’s Degree or Laurea Specialistica – a Master’s Degree) the final examination is taking place. Such examinations also presuppose a presentation of thesis or dissertation. Final grade is evaluated with the help of the following grades – 1-110. Here, the minimum grade is 66. If the general grade is higher than 110, a degree of cum laude may be awarded.
As I have already mentioned, there are two major options for the students: Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree. However, only very limited amount of the students stop their education at earning BA, as a rule they are becoming students of Laurea Specialistica.

Speaking about the higher education in Italy, one should mention that the history of the Italian Universities is rather long. It has begun in medieval times with the foundation of the University of Salerno (9th century) and the University of Bologna (1088). A little bit further, in 1222 the university of Padova was founded, and the University of Naples was founded by Frederick II two years later, after that, the following universities opened there doors: University of Florence, University of Pisa, University of Pavia, University of Turin.
Speaking about the present situation in the further education in Italy, one can mention that almost all the universities are public. The names of the majority of the universities are given to them after the place of their location.
In addition, to the public universities, the limited amount of private ones is also presented to the choice of the students; for example, Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi – the best school in economics, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – backed to the Catholic Church.
Bologna Process is that one who has the great influence on the higher educational system in Italy; according to it, the educational courses are usually divided into two ones: “Laurea” (tree years of education and a Bachelor’s degree, as a result) and “Laurea Specialistica” (two years of the education and a Master’s degree, as a result).
